Chapter 21
As Kemp reached the top of the stairs with the box of candy, he wondered if he could persuade Violet to spend the night. She could stay in the downstairs bedroom. She could sleep late the next morning. He was concerned that sheâd wake up too sore to get out of bed, need his help, and he wouldnât be there. Even more, he didnât want to walk her back to the cabin and leave her alone. Maybe he was being too protective or maybe he just didnât want to admit that he wanted her in his house and heâd use any excuse to keep her with him.
He stopped on the next-to-the-top step and realized heâd clutched the box so tightly that heâd smashed one corner. He eased his grip. If he wasnât careful, he was going to make a mess of these chocolates, too. But it told him something. Heâd come to care for her. He worried about her. He wanted to be with her. How it had happened so fast, he didnât know, but love was like that. Wait. Love? He wasnât willing to go that far, but he might be well on his way.
He glanced back at the box. Now heâd smashed another corner. No telling what shape the chocolates would be in by the time he finally gave them to her. He just hoped he hadnât melted them with the heat of his hand.
He was hot and bothered by the revelations that had been pinging around in his mind, particularly since heâd seen her breasts. He should have left her alone. He should have waited for her to come downstairs. He should have fixed supper with nothing more on his mind than feeding her.
Instead, heâd had to come upstairs. Heâd had to disturb her. Heâd had to surprise her. And because of all that, heâd had to see the beauty that he would never in a million years be able to forgetâ¦even if he never got to cup those full mounds with both hands. And on the tail end of that thought, he crushed the cardboard box and smashed the candy inside.
He just stood there looking at it. How could he present her with another mess? Heâd planned it so well. Heâd thought about how pleased sheâd be with a fresh box of chocolates. Heâd known sheâd be happy and forget all about the patio incident. Now sheâd remember it all and how he was the one who couldnât keep from ruining her candy.
So be it. He wasnât getting her into his bed anytime soon. She was probably hiding out in the bathroom. Sheâd probably put her dirty clothes back on and covered them with his big robe just to be on the safe side from his prying eyes. Sheâd probably insist on going to the cabin with no supper, no him. He felt the box give a little more in his fist. He sighed. If he didnât get rid of it soon, thereâd be nothing left but a few smears and him with a regretful expression on his face.
